About Organization :

National Institute of Women, Child and Youth Development (NIWCYD) was established by development workers with Gandhian orientation in 1982 and registered under the Society Registration Act 1860 in the year 1985. The organization is of an all India character. Presently it is working in four states viz. Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh & some part of Uttar Pradesh. NIWCYD had started its journey of development work from 14 remote villages of Madhya Pradesh and is presently, working in more than 5000 poorest villages of Central India. Over the past 32 years, NIWCYD has been working on the five basic themes of development, i.e. livelihood enhancement, community organization, women empowerment, Child Rights and Education, Water and Sanitation, environment, Disaster Management and Coordination & Networking with various stakeholders including government departments.

Objective

  • Working for overall development of women, children and youth and empowering them for the purpose of obtaining their participation in the process of their own development,
  • Developing skills and leadership potential of rural, urban and tribal youth,
  • Improving self-sufficiency of people living in remote areas of the country by their social and political empowerment through Panchayat Raj Institutions and local CBOs without drastically altering their life styles and
  • Undertaking activities related to Natural Resource Management including soil and water development and conservation.

Major Activities conducted in the last three years

Livelihood strengthening

NIWCYD reach out in about 4000 villages in rural and tribal areas. In 200 villages the food security of the people has increased from 4-5 months to 10-12 months.

Village level cope up mechanisms like grain and seed banks and village funds have been developed and strengthened in 200 villages.

450 Farmers Interest Groups and 9 Producer Organization have been registered under Companies Act for the promotion of agriculture commodities and their fair prices.

The strategies adopted by NIWCYD in livelihood strengthening are:

  • Model resource development
  • Developing linkages with the government programmes and schemes
  • Influencing government policies
  • Alliances with like-minded organizations and stakeholders.

Women Empowerment

Around 150,000 women mobilized under different awareness programmes.

Formed 8000 women Self Help Groups in the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

5000 women have been trained in different skills and entrepreneurs

1500 SHGs started Income Generation Programmes. Most of the IGPs are related to agro allied and forest based.

Increased women participation in the village assembly meetings from 0-5% to 40%-50% in 2000 villages.

35 women federations established and registered under the appropriate act for sustainability of ongoing women programme.

The strategies adopted by NIWCYD in women empowerment are:

  • Mobilizing and organizing women groups
  • Capacity building of women in participation at decentralized governance, addressing household level and community level social issues
  • Capacity building in skills and education and working towards creating opportunities for their better working and work culture
  • Sensitizing male (counterparts) towards gender equity, socio-cultural issues and creation of environment

Education and Child Rights

Over 9000 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe children have been brought up to primary level through the Creche cum Nutrition Programme.

Over 15000 drop out & slow learner children in the school going age have been streamlined into formal education system through Bridge support.

Educationally backward children from the 111 schools of Zila Parishad in the Vidarbha have been encouraged to be at par with the normal children in those schools.

30% (120 out of 400) girl child labors workings in the stone crusher units and migrating for the work in the Jabalpur area have been withdrawn from the hazardous working situation.

400 child labor and rack pickers linked with primary education programme.

1000 children rehabilitated in to their homes from railway stations. 

3622 children working in the cotton farms have been regularized in to mainstream education system.

Grass root Institution Building

Capacity building of grass root CBOs on right based issues & management

Campaign for right to livelihood of the people displaced due to dams and National parks

Formed and strengthened around 200 Village Development Committees (VDC) for livelihood

Networking with different NGOs on livelihood issues

Formation of around 1600 gramdoots in remote tribal and rural areas

13 block level gramdoot associations formed for linkage of different government schemes.

The strategies adopted for this are:

  • Forming/Fostering institutions as vehicles of change
  • Forming/fostering new forms of community institutions for action
  • Building Overarching Advocacy systems
  • Information-Knowledge Transfer and Sharing (IKTS)
  • (Creation of) new Social Action Groups (SAG)
  • (Creation of) new non-party political leadership

Microfinance

Developing bank linkages-2400 women SHGs linked with banks and financial institutions

Linking with the schemes of the government and different financial institutions

Developing guidelines for financial management of self help groups.

Supportive supervision of the groups.

Internal lending and savings to the tune of Rs. 2,10,99,707.00

 

Rehabilitation

Transit shelters provided to 70 flood affected families and permenant houses for 32 families in Dharchula district of Uttarakhand

Water and Sanitation Programme

1300 Masons are trained in toilet construction.

2500 frontline workers are trained for community mobilization on water and sanitation.

20000 toilets constructed in Dindori and Sagar Districts with the support of Government of Madhya Pradesh.

60 Master trainers are trained on different training viz. CLTS, front line workers and PRIs.

IEC Material on 10 different topics developed for community mobilization.
