About Organization :

Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) is a non-profit development organization committed to enabling vulnerable groups to access their rights. YUVA encourages the formation of people’s collectives that engage in the discourse on development, thereby ensuring self-determined and sustained collective action in communities. This work is complemented with advocacy and policy recommendations. Founded in Mumbai in 1984, currently YUVA operates in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Assam and New Delhi.

Objective

YUVA will empower the oppressed and the marginalized by facilitating organizations and institutions towards building equal partnerships in the development process, ensuring the fulfillment of the human rights to live in security, dignity and peace. YUVA will also engage in critical partnership with government and forge alliances with other actors of civil society such as people’s movements, trade unions, women’s groups, academic institutions and private sector players to enable and strengthen the people’s empowerment process.

Major Activities conducted in the last three years

  • “Shoshan se Azaadi campaign”- freedom from all forms of violence- a campaign during the month of August in commemoration of Independence day to galvanize children’s actions and child-led campaigns around all forms of abuse and violence- child labour, sexual abuse, domestic violence, etc. This is done annually through street plays by children, corner meetings in community, sessions and activities that promote awareness around child rights, and in August 2020 through online sessions and social media awareness.
  • Child rights Caravan: a journey of the city children’s collective around the city making different pit-stops at important spaces to raise awareness about child rights. This was done during child rights month in November 2019. They took out rallies, stuck stickers, posters and engaged with decision-makers.
  • My Ward My CPC campaign: A campaign to promote the formation and activation of Child protection committees in the city as a response to decentralize child protection at every ward and community level. The district collector of Mumbai suburban was extremely impacted and sanctioned an activation toolkit and also gave an immediate order for formation of CPCs in Mumbai.
